For the Army and Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES), S&S prepared an Environmental Assessment (EA) to evaluate the potential environmental impacts associated with the relocation and consolidation of the Express/Class Six and Service Station/Auto Parts Store and the interior image upgrade of the Main Exchange on Hanscom Air Force Base, Middlesex County, MA approximately 14 miles from Boston, MA. At the time of the EA, AAFES facilities and services were inefficiently dispersed across Hanscom AFB and were old, did not meet code, and did not meet AAFES’s mission of providing a convenient shopping experience for military families. Further, the age of these facilities resulted in increased energy consumption and higher operational and maintenance costs to the United States Air Force (USAF) and AAFES. The EA analyzed a full suite of environmental resources and also included a full analysis of impacts to the environment from the demolition of the existing AAFES facilities. This EA also received an intense level of environmental review and approval from the USAF, Air Force Mobility Command Headquarters, Air Force Installation Mission Support Center.
